Sugar is the New Fat
I know many of you are interested in weight loss and eating healthier. Some of you have told me that you have tried many different diets without any real or long-lasting success. Therefore, I want to point out a few simple things to pay attention to.
For the longest time, we were told that FAT is the culprit and makes us fat. Well, this myth has since been debunked (healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds, grass-fed butter, salmon, sardines and herring are essential to good health), and science shows that we need to be paying attention to sugar instead.
The average American consumes 152 pounds of sugar each year, in addition to 146 pounds of flour. Think about it - that's almost one pound of sugar and flour per person per day. Dr. Mark Hyman from the Cleveland Clinic writes:
"Sugar in all its forms is the root cause of our obesity epidemic and most of the chronic disease sucking the life out of our citizens and our economy — and, increasingly, the rest of the world. You name it, it’s caused by sugar: heart disease, cancer, dementia, type 2 diabetes, depression, and even acne, infertility and impotence."
You might say here, "No way am I eating that much each day." The problem is, you are not aware that you are, because sugar and flour are in so many things. Flour is obviously in bread, rolls, pasta, pastries, many fried foods and sauces. It's even worse with sugar. Sugar hides under many different names and is in 74% of the items in each grocery store. Let that sink in for a moment.
So what can you do? Read the ingredient list of EVERYTHING!!! You will be surprised to find sugar added to canned vegetables, broth, pasta sauce, condiments, yogurt and more.
Please also don't be fooled by healthy-looking product labels (often in the color green or with the words 'natural' and 'pure'), even packaged organic or gluten-free products. While the ingredients might be organic/gluten-free, the product can still be full of sugar.

TIP: Keep a screenshot of the list on your phone so you can quickly pull it up when you are in the grocery store looking at products.
Another simple step you can take is to cook at home - from scratch. It's not that difficult, and once you get the hang of it, it will not be as time-consuming anymore either. By cooking at home, you control what goes into your meals, because when we're eating out we just don't know.
One last thing I want to mention about sugar, which will blow your mind, is that it has been shown to be eight times as addictive as cocaine. So no wonder we want more of it. A great way to break the cycle of addiction is to do a reset.
